Surfers spend so much time with nature it’s no wonder they are doing what they can to look after the environment.
Surfers Against Sewage (or the SAS campaign as they are also known) have been campaigning for clean waters since 1990. A group of surfers, fed up with suffering repeated ear, throat and gastric infections wanted the sewage pollution of their Cornish surf breaks to stop. The campaign has been successful to the point where the UK is now on its way to having some of the cleanest beaches and bathing waters in Europe.
Taking another slant on the environment, the EcoSurf Project is an organisation who are working to close the gap between surfing’s eco-friendly image and the actual state of the surfing industry and consumers within it. They offer Eco Tips for Surfers on their website, and have recently launched a new online shop selling eco-friendly surf gear (including boards), surf wear & accessories. 100% of profits from the EcoSurf store goes back into the EcoSurf Project to help create a more environmentally aware, ethical future for surfing.
