A recent report by Greenpeace predicts that with the right policy moves and investment, solar power can provide electricity to upwards of 2 billion people, provide 2 million jobs, and reduce carbon emissions equivalent to that of 140 coal fired power plants by 2040.
In order for this to happen, the solar industry must continue to grow. According to the report, in 2005 the European PV market alone was valued at more than 5 billion euros. However, that could change if the right policy incentives aren’t implemented. The study concludes with three main policy recommendations:
1) Best practices and technology must be supported and shared.
2) Subsidies for fossil fuels and nuclear energy must be removed.
3) The accessibility and security of the PV/solar markets must be secured globally.
