Airline boss he may be, but Richard Branson is also my top eco-hero businessman/entrepreneur/celebrity for his good intentions this month. You may say that good intentions don’t save the world, but I’ll argue that this man has put his money where his mouth is. After the news last week of Richard committing £1.6bn to help combat global warming, he’s gone on this week to do something that no-one else in the airline industry has bothered to do, and that’s think of a clever way to reduce carbon emissions by 25% without even needing to reduce the number of flights. Now, don’t get me wrong, I’m not endorsing flying, in fact I think it would be a good idea to allow only limited air travel for everyone (something along the lines of the personal energy-use limits that are being discussed at the moment). However, if more businesses and even the government thought the way that this man does, perhaps we wouldn’t be quite so far up the proverbial “shit-creek” without a paddle.
