When my husband, Pete, came home with the news that biodiesel is now being made out of chocolate, I thought he was pulling my leg. You see, I’m known for a love of chocolate that at times borders on obsession. But after a little bit of research I found that he was in fact telling me the truth.
The good news is, it’s not just any old chocolate (and I’m somewhat relieved by this discovery), but chocolate waste from a chocolate factory. Here’s how it all happens: Chocolate waste is heated with a number of chemicals. The substance then splits into two liquids, one of which has a secret ingredient added to it to make a fuel. It costs 15p a litre to make, and in a car that makes 50mpg, 8,000 small chocolate bars would take you 3,300 miles. The fuel is being tested on an overland trip through Africa by Andy Pag.
