Climate change is inevitable and we have to find ways to adapt to living in a warmer world. Frances Cairncross addressed the BA annual festival with this message. She believes that at this stage even maximum deployment of the most eco-friendly technology can’t stop global warming, and that attempts to reduce emissions through the Kyoto protocol just won’t work.
In an interview with the BBC, Ms Cairncross said:
“[Climate change] is undoubtedly going to happen on the basis of all we know at the moment.”
“One of the most thorough reports was done by the International Energy Agency in the summer, and that suggested that even if we threw at climate change all we had at the moment, even if we put it all in place, we would still see a rise in the concentration of emissions.
“[So] although we’ve got to continue taking steps to slow it down, we’ve also got to realise we’re going to live in a warmer world.”
In order to adapt to living in a warmer world, Ms Cairncross is of the opinion that the British government should be implementing and planning policies now, for example, developing new crops, constructing flood defenses and banning building close to sea level.
