Next stop, nuclear fallout

Last week a reporter from The Mirror walked up to an unattended nuclear waste train in a NorthWest London depot and planted a fake bomb on the train.

“The gate was open, there were no security guards… I walked up to the train and planted my bomb.”

Tom Parry, reporter

“I’m appalled. Every one of these trains would be a potential target for terrorists. If you had an incident in London, I estimate that 190,000 people would have to be evacuated. Those flasks were designed to counter accidents. But they weren’t designed to counter the likes of al-Qaeda.”

87% of British public opposed to new nuclear power stations

From the Green Party press office:

In advance of the government’s energy review due tomorrow, the Green Party today released the results of a national survey dramatically highlighting public opposition to a new generation of nuclear power stations, and revealing widespread criticism of the way in which the government conducted it’s review.

Green Party Principal Speaker Keith Taylor commented: “When asked directly whether they supported plans to build new nuclear power stations, 87% of respondents rejected the nuclear option, in stark contrast to an overwhelming 98% support for greater investment in renewable energy, and 99% support for greater investment in energy-saving measures at home and work. This puts pay to any suggestion the nuclear power is accepted as a necessary evil by the UK.

New generation flower power

The Dutch Advisory for the Landscape asked designers to come up with a new generation wind-turbine. One Architecture, Ton Matton and NL architect (collectively known at 100MW Mountain) did just that with this bouquet of “flower power” windmills. Via: Ecofriend

Surfers Against Sewage supports plans for wave energy

While some surfers are dead-set against it, Surfers Against Sewage are putting their support behind plans for the £20m Wave Hub planned for the north Cornwall coast because they believe that the wave height will be reduced by only a small amount, and that the environmental benefits are worth it.

The proposed power station, to become operational in 2008, will involve up to 20 sets of machines, with pumps, pistons and turbines, about 10 miles (16km) out to sea off St Ives Bay, generating electricity for 14,000 homes.

UK Schools Compete for Wind Power

Friends of the Earth have launched a competition for schools and youth groups to win a wind turbine worth over £1500. The “Shout About Climate Change Solutions 2006” competition is open to schools and youth groups taking part in the FOEs “Shout about climate change solutions” week from November 6 – 10 2006.

“Shout About Climate Change Solutions” week is an annual nationwide week of activity to raise awareness and encourage action on climate change. Pupils taking part in the competition will be asked to investigate what individuals or organisations in their communities are doing to tackle climate change. They will record the achievements of community climate heroes through film, photography, audio or the written word.
