Ireland’s virtually got rid of them, South Africa has done it too, so it beggars belief that the UK is still using around 17 million plastic bags each year.
The government has been slow to do anything about the plastic bag menace that litters our streets and blows around landfill sites. Thankfully, some progressive businesses are starting to take the problem seriously.
Ikea, for example, will be charging customers 5p for each plastic bag that they use with immediate effect, with the price rising to 10p from September. They are reducing the price of their re-usable bags to 25p to further encourage people to forget about using plastic bags. Let’s hope that more shops follow suit.
Organic-ally, the online string-bag shop who are working to reduce plastic and paper usage, are offering 10% off orders of £18 or more (excluding P&P) until the end of July. Just enter the promotional code RCU1810 when prompted at the checkout page.
