Using recycled paper is the number one thing a magazine can do to significantly decrease its negative environmental impact. At the Magazine PAPER Project at Co-op America (www.magazinepaper.org), we provide free technical assistance and expertise to magazines that are interested in switching to recycled paper. We provide them with all the tools and resources they need to get started. It would be even better if Elle magazine could publish every issue on recycled paper, not just for their green issue. More than 18,000 titles exist, with only 100 or so publications that are using environmentally responsible paper. The paper and production industry is an incredibly wasteful and environmentally harmful practice. More than 35 million trees are cut down for magazine paper each year, which ends up being more land cleared than the state of Florida. Encourage all your favorite publications to go green, and to contact us to learn how!
