The Guardian reports that Mikhail Gorbachev, former Soviet president, has written to Tony Blair in an attempt to stop him pursuing nuclear power in the United Kingdom, telling him that it is not viable solution either socially, environmentally or economically, and that it certainly won’t help the climate change problem.

“There is too much at stake to allow short-term political considerations to dominate G8 proceedings [about energy],”

“The approach by the G8 of facilitating nuclear power lacks vision, and relegates renewable energy and energy efficiency to secondary status.”

Mr Gorbachev has urged Tony to help establish a “global solar fund” worth £27bn.
