The latest move in the competition for the “green” pound sees Sainsbury’s supermarket replacing its current plastic carrier bags with new bags made up of 33% recycled plastic, 10% chalk and 57% new plastic. The new orange bags will be phased in starting next month and will save 6,500 tons of plastic every year. The current white plastic bags will be phased out by February 2007.
Tesco plans to introduce biodegradable carrier bags this month, Sainsbury’s has pledged to package 500 of its own brand goods in compostable packaging, and Asda has said that it will cut packaging by 5% over 5 years from 2008.
