Environmentalists celebrated today when the government finally committed itself to debating a Climate Change Bill in the next session of parliament. The Big Ask, a campaign by Friends of the Earth to secure the bill, will continue its work to ensure that the legislation set up in debate is strong, and that it will lead to cuts in emissions.

“My government will publish a bill on climate change as part of its policy to protect the environment, consistent with the need to secure long-term energy supplies.”

Her Majesty the Queen,
opening of Parliament, 15 November 2006
